Knights saddle netters with second consecutive setback
The Luverne Cardinals dropped their second consecutive tennis match when they challenged Sioux Falls O’Gorman’s junior varsity squad Wednesday in Sioux Falls.
The Knights won five of the six singles matches and posted one victory in doubles on the way to securing a 6-3 victory.
“They are a good team. They are pretty steady and don’t make a lot of mistakes. It was a great learning opportunity for our team,” said LHS coach Greg Antoine.
O’Gorman’s Jeremy Bird (10-2 over Cory Stroeh at No. 1), Sam Derner (10-7 over Trey Baustian at No. 3), Aidan Nguen (10-1 over Isaac Gillette at No. 4), Zach Curd (11-10, 7-3 in the tiebreaker over Mark Robinson at No. 5) and Jonah Dailey (10-2 over Jim Erickson at No. 6) posted singles wins for the hosts.
The Knights’ first doubles team of Bird and Nick Moran handed Chris Jelken and Dalton Schoeneman a 10-6 setback.
Jacob Jarchow notched a 10-8 win over Moran at second singles for LHS.
Erik Wohnoutka and Stroeh secured an 11-9 victory over Derner and Nguen at second doubles, while Robinson and Cade VerSteeg secured a 10-7 win against Curd and Dailey at No. 3.
