The skies around Rock County have been absent the telltale signs of winter weather approaching.
Flocks of ducks and geese headed south for warmer temperatures are not flying overhead in large numbers as they have in past years.
“If they are happy, they are not going to move,” said Wendy Krueger, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources wildlife specialist. “The biggest push is yet to come.”
Weather will dictate when the push starts, she said.
Until temperatures stay cold to form ice around their water source or until snow covers food sources, the large V-shaped formations of birds moving south won’t be seen across Rock County anytime soon.
The migration will happen in smaller, less noticeable groupings until all the migratory birds have moved south, Krueger said.
