When I heard Premium Pork was coming to Luverne, I was excited. I thought I heard $20 plus per hour – good deal! Someone finally to take the place of Mid-Pack and IBP in the early days.
Then, in the ’80s we had a union-busting president, poor farming economy, and social justice went down the drain.
Now fast-forward -- $13 an hour. Come on, guys, how low can you go? I don’t know what Sioux Falls pays, but I hear Worthington is $16.80 per hour.
We all know bosses need more than workers, but $13 an hour will only bring more free food lines, empty food shelves, more free school lunches and higher welfare taxes for Luverne and Rock County.
Business leaders like Bill Gates and Mark Cuban are asking business to raise wages as workers can’t make it.
Luverne is not a free labor camp. You get what you pay for. Think about it. Time will tell.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Relay For Life of Rock County will be participating in a statewide Stronger Together alternative campaign.
Cancer patients are some of the most vulnerable to COVID-19. By having the opportunity to support the Relay For Life of Rock County online, it allows everyone – including  cancer patients, survivors and their caregivers – to safely join with others to celebrate, remember and fight back.
With our local Relay For Life and other events that fuel the American Cancer Society’s mission altered drastically due to COVID-19, the fight against cancer is at risk. But it’s a fight that can’t be canceled, postponed or rescheduled. Cancer won’t stop. So neither can we.
The Relay For Life of Rock County joins others from across Minnesota in fundraising and activities from June 1 – Aug. 1. Our Leadership Team is also working on other ways to safely “Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back” in our area communities, so watch our media sources including Facebook at Relay For Life of Rock County MN.
Cancer patients are counting on the American Cancer Society more than ever. Funds raised through Relay For Life help the American Cancer Society continue programs that are critical to cancer patients now and in the future.
That includes being available day or night at 1-800-227-2345 and the “COVID-19 and Cancer” resources at cancer.org/coronavirus.
Support cancer patients in our community at RelayForLife.org/RockCountyMN by getting registered today.

To the Editor:
What happened to the Maplewood Cemetery grounds/caretaker this year during the Memorial Day weekend? In over 50 years I’ve never seen it looking like it did – long grass, dandelions, weeds and what-not-all.
I realize the COVID situation is an issue; however, I didn’t think it had anything to do with running a mower!
I visited three other cemeteries that day, and each of them had been nicely mowed. In addition, I didn’t see many lawns within Luverne that hadn’t been mowed.
Thank you.
