Each spring the Tri-State Band Festival Committee partners with the Luverne High School graphic and fine arts departments to develop designs for its annual band festival button.
The purchase of the button allows admittance into the festival’s afternoon field competition event on Sept. 26.
This year’s design winner is Akseli Hatakka, Luverne High School’s 2014-2015 exchange student.
The Helsinki, Finland, native has since returned home in June to complete his final year of school.
Hatakka told button contest organizers he didn’t consider himself an artist and was surprised that his favorite class while in Luverne was graphic arts.
His four-color design features a black musical note with a red banner proclaiming the “65th Annual” event in white letters. The musical note’s head is shaped as a bass drum with drawings of a yellow trumpet and trombone on either side of the banner.
The words “Luverne, MN” and “Sept. 26, 2015” are at the bottom and top of the musical note. “Tri-State Band Festival” is written in white in the button’s red circular border.
“I just wanted to create a design that would catch the eye and just look nice,” Hatakka said when contacted earlier this week through social media.
Buttons are on sale for $4 at the Luverne Area Chamber Office, 213 E. Luverne Street.
