A new attraction will be on tap at the 2016 Rock River Beerfest in Luverne Aug. 20.
The inaugural stein-holding contest kicks off at 3 p.m. at the Blue Mound Ice Arena.
The contest is limited to 20 men and 20 women who will compete for $50 cash and their name etched on a traveling trophy.
“It's a winner-take-all contest for the men’s and women’s divisions,” said originator Rick Peterson.
Signup begins at 2 p.m. when doors open at the ice arena for the third annual Rock River Beerfest.
The competition will feature a series of five-person heats.
Participants will hold a stein filled with beer (weighing 5 1/2 pounds) straight out in front of them at shoulder height.
Those who last the longest without spilling or dropping their arms in each heat move into the finals, Peterson said.
Anyone holding the stein for 5 minutes or more also goes into the finals.
Beerfest will also feature a homebrew contest for the third year in a row. Entry deadline is Friday, Aug. 12.
Rock River Beerfest features samples from 25 breweries involving more than 100 beer and wine samples.
Commemorative Beerfest mugs are given at the door.
Cost is $25 in advance and $30 the day of the event. Designated driver tickets can be purchased for $10 on the day of the event.
Free trolley rides within seven miles of Luverne are available to and from the Beerfest. To arrange a ride, contact the Luverne Chamber at 283-4061 or Jane Wildung Lanphere at 920-5197.
Food and snacks will be available from The Bluestem, Sterling’s Café & Grille, and Relay for Life.
Proceeds from the Beerfest support Luverne’s 150th anniversary celebration in 2017.
Advanced tickets are available at the Luverne Chamber, Take 16 Brewing Company and Blue Mound Liquor Store.
