Sundogs appear on frigid horizon

Lead Summary

Luverne native Scott Lopau shared this photograph of sundogs on the western horizon Saturday afternoon, Jan. 9. Sundogs are atmospheric phenomena that consist of a pair of bright spots on either side on the sun. They occur in very cold weather when drifting ice crystals in the air act as prisms to refract the light. This photograph was taken on West Main Street in Luverne facing west with the RCO facility in the foreground. Sub-zero temperatures carried through the weekend and into Tuesday, with blowing snow on Monday night causing travel hazards for motorists in southwest Minnesota.
