Luverne artist Jerry Deuschle hosted an informal artist reception Friday night at his studio for three of his students to showcase their work from the semester.
Genna Rolfs, Katlyn Petronek and Rylee Gee completed an independent study course through Minnesota West Community College as a post-secondary education option.
Deuschle teaches art for Minnesota West at the Jackson campus, but since the coursework was independent study, the students — all Luverne High School juniors — were able to complete the three fall credits in Deuschle’s studio north of Luverne.
The coursework dealt with clay — slab rolling, pinch and coil methods, and Deuschle spent four hours a week instructing students on the methods.
They completed their work as their schedules allowed.
“I basically turned the studio over to them,” Deuschle said.
“But they’re giving back to me by putting me back in touch with youth. … They get excited about things, so I get excited about theings.”
The students are already registered for another three credits with Deuschle starting in January.
