For Luverne High School spring play director Shawn Kinsinger, the choice for this year’s production is a compromise between students.
“Last fall I asked the kids what they wanted to do; half the kids wanted to do a musical and half wanted to do something different, but well-known,” he said.
“Larceny and Old Lace,” by Van Vandagriff is a spoof of the well-known theater production, “Arsenic and Old Lace.”
The two-act play takes place over one day, starting in the morning and ending later in the evening.
The play centers on Harold Peabody (played by junior Gunnar Oldre) and his elderly aunts Millie (sophomore Rylee Gee) and Gertie (junior Alexa Chesley).
While Gertie and Millie are gaming in Las Vegas, Harold stays at home to watch over his eccentric Uncle Charlie (freshman Luke Thorson), who thinks he is a pirate and is constantly “burying” treasure in the basement.
When Harold hears that the local bank has been robbed and then discovers a bag of money in the basement, he declares that Charlie must go to a home for senior citizens.
However, Millie and Gertie know that Charlie had nothing to do with the bank robbery. They stole the money from several casinos.
However, when Harold’s cousin Mordred (sophomore Xavier Carbonneau) and his sidekick Lester (freshman Pierce Cunningham) show up with their bag of money, the confusion begins.
Harold tries to keep his aunts out of jail, commit his uncle to a hospital, keep his fiancée Gloria (sophomore Elise Jarchow), and prevent Mordred from killing them all.
Additional cast members include FBI agents Klick (junior Meagan Hansen) and Klack (freshman Mia Wenzel), police officers (junior Jordan Winter and sophomore Seno Chanthalangsy), medical staff (freshman Griffen Jarchow, sophomore Josie Golla and freshman Drake Matherne), and taxi driver (freshman Isabelle Hoiland.)
Theater crew members include Jordyn Cleaveland, Sophie Holmberg, Adriana Gonzalez, Nicole Hoogland, Catalina Oakes and Melanie Rittenhouse.
This year’s production takes place Friday, March 29, and Saturday, March 30, at the Palace Theatre in downtown Luverne, due to construction at the high school.
Both performances will begin at 7 p.m.
Tickets can be purchased through the Palace Theater Box Office, 283-4339.
