Five Luverne High School students earned national recognition at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference June 28-July 2 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Zoe DeBates, Jacinda Hustoft, Lindsey Roemeling, Sage Ver Steeg and Shane Berning participated in one of 30 family and consumer science-related competitive events.
They competed against more than 4,500 students in the Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) event.
Ver Steeg received a gold rating for her advocacy project titled “Invisible Illnesses.
She developed a website that offers support and care kits for those affected by an illness and educate those who are not.
Roemeling and Hustoft also earned a gold rating for their chapter in review display and presentation.
The duo outlined group’s membership growth from 12 to more than 50 students and how the club officers kept members engaged.
Berning and DeBates received a bronze for their hospitality and tourism project.
They presented their “Luverne Getaway” idea, an on-line store where local residents and visitors can redeem coupons for a night out, family day excursion or a home-away-from home trip in Luverne.
The conference provided Luverne students opportunities to come together with other FCCLA members for energizing learning while listening to inspiring speakers, expanding leadership skills, sharpening talents and exploring career pathways.
Theme for this year’s conference was “Inspired by FCCLA.”
The theme inspired students to make the right choices and commit themselves to making a positive impact within their families, schools, FCCLA and communities.
FCCLA or Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work and societal issues through family and consumer sciences education.
