Local FFA chapters didn’t have to travel far to participate in the annual Minnesota FFA State Convention.
The high school students turned to their computers for this year’s event May 19-21. Organizers planned speakers, workshops, award presentations and evening activities for chapter members to experience virtually.
As part of the program, the top three placings in individual supervised agricultural experience categories were recognized at the state level.
Hills-Beaver Creek High School FFA Chapter members Carter Hartz and Hannah Fick were recognized at the virtual convention.
Hartz, a sophomore, received second place in fiber and oil crops. He works on a farm that produces CBD oil or cannabinoid.
Fick, a junior, placed fifth in agricultural sales at the state level. She works part time at Campbell’s Supply in Sioux Falls.
According to FFA chapter adviser Katie Rogers, Hartz and Fick both placed first in their proficiencies in Region IV judging.
In March the two were judged at the state level.
First-place winners advance to the National FFA Convention this fall.
All career development events (judging teams) were unable to compete virtually and the contests, including the state CDEs, were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
