Luverne will send a team of 21 students to Saturday’s section speech tournament after winning the Subsection 10 title March 26 in Adrian.
Thirty-eight students comprised the winning team.
The top four finishers at the subsections in each of the 13 speech categories move on to the Section 3A tournament in Marshall Saturday.
However, the 21 qualifiers may be joined by eight of their teammates Saturday in Marshall for the chance to earn a possible trip to the state speech tournament.
“There will be several team members who placed fifth at subsections that will go along as alternates, in case there are drops from the other two subsections,” said coach Caroline Thorson. “If that is the case, the fifth-place finishers from the other subsections are put in a hat and one is selected to compete.”
On Tuesday, Thorson and co-coach Gavin Folkestad were notified three of Luverne’s fifth-place finishers would also compete at the section tournament Saturday.
“We are so excited,” Thorson said. “We’re up to 24 going now.”
Sophia Lanoue, original oratory, Rylee Anderson, great speeches and Meagan Hansen, creative expression, will now compete for a state tournament berth.
Thirty-six students competed at the subsection tournament. Results from the subsection meet by category include:
•Creative expression: Solveig Tofteland, first; Cameron Wessels, fourth; Meagan Hansen, fifth.
•Discussion: Alexa Chesley, first; Melanie Rittenhouse, third; Burke Johnson, fourth.
•Drama: Brianna Jonas, second.
•Duo interpretation: Isabelle Hoiland and Gretchen Jacobsma, fourth; Destiny Matthiesen and Cassie Flanagan, fifth; Emma Lusty and Cassi Chesley, sixth.
•Extemporaneous reading: Nicole Hoogland, first; Courtney Wendland, second.
•Extemporaneous speaking: Shane Berning, first; Parker Carbonneau, second; Chance Tunnissen, third.
•Great speeches: Jordan Winter, third; Rylee Anderson, fifth; Hannah Baker, sixth.
•Humorous: Seno Chanthalangsy, first; Luke Thorson, third; John Miller, fifth; Gunnar Oldre, sixth.
•Original oratory: Lindsey Roemeling, first; Sophia Lanoue, fifth.
•Poetry: Adriana Gonzalez, second; Naomi Ring, fourth; Zoe Perkins, fifth; Mia Wenzel, sixth.
•Prose: Sage Ver Steeg, first.
•Storytelling: Xavier Carbonneau, second; Jonah Louwagie, third; Julia Ferguson, fifth; Roslynn Hartshorn, sixth.
Coach Thorson said this year’s team’s consistency as a top-finishing team is due to participation in almost all the speech categories.
Last week’s subsection meet consisted of three rounds and then a final round of the top six students in each category.
Luverne had students in nine out of the 13 categories.
From Saturday’s section competition, the top three speakers in the final round in each category qualify for the April 12-13 state tournament at Wayzata.
Luverne qualified four students for the 2018 state tournament. Adrian sent two students.
