Ten senior students received honors this week for their positive leadership at Luverne High School.
On Monday a king and queen will be named during a live-streamed ceremony, and the two will reign over the four-day Snow Week at LHS.
The program begins at noon on the school Facebook site.
King candidates include Cade Wenninger, Zach Ahrendt, Peter Baustian, Xavier Carbonneau and Ethan Beyer.
Queen candidates are Regan Feit, Roz Oye, Gracie Zewiske, Elise Jarchow and Ainslie Robinson.
Unlike royalty selected by students for fall Homecoming activities, Snow Week candidates are nominated and voted on by high school faculty.
Instructors select students who display positive leadership qualities in the classroom, in activities and in the community during the students’ four years at LHS.
As faculty select Snow Week royalty, the student council plans the activities, many of which are similar to those conducted at Homecoming, except with a snow theme.
Students and faculty participate in dress-up days such as pajama, jersey, college and winter wear, and on Wednesday, Feb. 10, students will attend a virtual pep fest from their classrooms.
Thursday, Feb. 11, is designated as “ride your snowmobile to school day” and an afternoon of outdoor activities are planned.
Student Council members planned activities around pandemic rules that prevent large group gatherings.
Jan. 26 was the first time all middle school and high school students gathered for in-person instruction since distance learning began in March 2020.
To help prevent the virus from spreading, all students are assigned to pods and smaller groups.
“Normally all the student body would watch the coronation in person,” said high school principal Ryan Johnson.
This year only seniors will attend coronation in person, with grades 9-11 watching from classrooms.
