Rock's Robotics returns to state competition Saturday

Rock County 4-H robotics team, Rock’s Robotics, returns to the state First LEGO League robotics challenge Saturday
Three 4-H’ers, two veteran robotic team members and one rookie, travel Saturday to Augustana University, University for competition.
Zoey Berghorst and Zoe Perkins are fifth-year members and Saturday’s event is the fourth time the duo has competed on a state-qualifying team.
Both are eighth-graders at Luverne Middle School.
Berghorst, 14, heads the team’s project and LEGO robot programming. Perkins, 13, is the group’s project professional.
Mazzi Moore, 13, is a seventh-grader at Hills-Beaver Creek. This is her first season with the 4-H robotics team. She also works on programming for the team.
The trio will complete all three parts to the LEGO challenge including the robot game, innovation project and core values.
The First LEGO League challenges young people to think like scientists and engineers as they program a LEGO robot to compete maneuvers and specific tasks related to the season’s theme, City Shaper.
According to the organization’s website, youth are tasked with creating a better world and providing creative solutions to help transportation, the environment and new developments that will help the world last over a thousand generations.
Teams are judged on how well they incorporate core values of discovery, innovation, impact, teamwork, inclusion and fun into the robotics game and in the presentation innovation projects.
The project identifies a problem with a building or public space within their community and the team’s solution design.
At the regional competition last month, Berghorst, Perkins and Moore were joined by teammates Bradey Lemme, Logan Wrigg and Ethan Berghorst.
Aaron Perkins and Randy Berghorst are the team’s adult volunteer coaches.
