Former Rock County 4-H’er Cheyenne Edmundson was right at home Friday coordinating the first of two summer day camps.
As this year’s summer intern, Edmundson sees her position not just as a job but a way to repay an organization she credits for cultivating the focus and passion for agriculture during the 11 years she was a member.
“4-H has been a benefit to me in other organizations at school. I learned a hard work ethic, organizational skills, being a positive role model,” she said. “I want to give back to the organization.”
A senior at South Dakota State University in Brookings, Edmundson is working toward an animal science degree with a business specialization.
She also sees her minors in food safety and agronomy combining with the experiences of growing up on a farm near Garretson as leading her to choose a career that bridges consumers and producers.
“I have a passion for agriculture,” she said. “Cultured by all those years in 4-H.”
On Friday Edmundson provided the bridge to the day camp participants in the stations she organized.
Centered around the theme “The Path to 4-H is Sweet,” participants learned how a plant grows, where different countries are located, how to communicate effectively, and what life is like on a farm.
“This brings back memories of other day camps I’ve been to,” Edmundson said.
She likened her experiences as a youth as “thinking outside the box,” becoming excited about hands-on learning and perfecting skills like public speaking.
Edmundson, the daughter of Kelvin and Melissa Edmundson, will also assist the Extension Office in the next day camp scheduled for July 8.
Day camps are open to students in grades 1-4.
Edmundson will also assist in 4-H’s premier event, the Rock County Fair, scheduled for July 27-30.
