A variety of weather fronts descended on visitors of Luverne’s 56th annual Hot Dog Night Thursday, July 12.
By the 5:30 p.m. serving time, the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls had issued a heat advisory for the second consecutive day, with temperatures in the 90s and “feel like” temperatures ranging from 100 to 105 degrees.
About an hour into the event, a cold front passed through Luverne bringing relief to the heat but resulting in scattered showers through the area.
Hot Dog Night visitors moved under tents and awnings as the showers passed.
The 11th annual Weiner Dog Beauty Pageant and 15th annual Weiner Dog Races went on as scheduled.
Male beauty pageant winner was Moose, dressed as a loofa and owned by Jessi Landry of Sioux Falls. Second was Remy, dressed as a banana split and owned by April Norman.
Female beauty pageant winner was Myla, owned by the Austin and Sam Westly family of Sioux Falls. Myla was dressed as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, with family members dressed as Oz characters. Second place was Gracie, a queen with royal cloak and crown, owned by Autumn Norman.
Zoey, owned by Paul Wagner of Sioux Falls, won the wiener dog race, with Jazzy, owned by Misty and Rick Kuhnert of Brandon, second, and Precious, owned by Mary Kraayenhof of Luverne in third place.
By 9 p.m., however, thunderstorms moved into the area bringing an early end to Hot Dog Night events, including the outdoor concert.
The Luverne area received more than 2 inches of rain.
“You can’t do anything with weather,” said Jane Wildung-Lanphere, Luverne Area Chamber director.
The evening activities were deemed a success with very few of the estimated 15,000 hot dogs left over.
“I think everyone is satisfied,” Lanphere said. “People mustered through the weather.”
