Luverne students in grades one through six experienced what it would be like to play on the varsity football field Friday nights.
A mini football clinic took place Friday afternoon at Cardinal field, where students working on catching, passing and other skills to play football before the evening’s home game.
High school coach Todd Oye said the mini clinic doesn’t always occur, but weather and timing combined to bring dozens of seasoned players together with their upcoming replacements.
“It is good for our high school kids to see they are role models to the younger kids,” Oye said.
The skills practiced included proper techniques of running with the ball, tackling, punting, catching and throwing.
Also on the same football field Friday afternoon were the high school cheerleaders who conducted their annual cheer clinic.
The clinic is where current high school juniors Naomi Ring and Zoe DeBates first learned about rooting for the home team.
“It is super fun,” said Ring, who is now a varsity cheerleader.
The 40 elementary students who attended the camp were invited to cheer with the 11 varsity cheerleaders during the first quarter of the variety football game Friday evening.
During the rest of the game the kindergarten through fifth-graders assisted their mentors in the stands.
“It’s so cute,” Ring said. “The little ones trying to chant along.”
