The Luverne Area Aquatics and Fitness Center is about to see a $4.8 million remodel and expansion that will include an outdoor splash pad and 24-hour fitness access.
City leaders, administration and expansion committee members met Thursday night to review plans, final architect drawings and finishing options.
Plans date back to 2016 when citizen input showed the community supported an investment in the facility upgrade.
At Thursday’s meeting, principal architect Kyle Raph of Co-op Architecture, Sioux Falls, offered a timeline for construction.
•The Luverne City Council will take it up at an August meeting to sign off on final plans and costs.
•A construction “kick-off” meeting will be in mid-September.
•The council will approve solicitation of bids in November.
•Bids will be received and approved in December.
•Ground-breaking will be mid-March of 2021.
•Project completion is estimated by May of 2022.
The splash pad will be started first, since it will not disrupt other areas of operation.
The swimming pool will remain open during construction.
A planned 21,000-square-foot indoor walking track estimated to cost more than $3 million has been dropped from the plans, possibly to be considered in the future.
