Luverne High School students will perform their annual fall play — about a play being conducted in a high school auditorium — in the Luverne High School auditorium next week.
“Paranormal High School,” written by Andrew Ross, is set in Bram Stoker High School, home of the Fighting Tarantulas.
Its drama class wants to perform William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” and as the students begin rehearsals, they scoff about the curse surrounding the Scottish play.
When strange things start happening, thanks to the ghosts of two actors from the 1920s played by Marisol Hartshorn (Ghost Lady Macbeth) and Brandon Claussen (Ghost Macbeth), two paranormal investigators from a cheesy TV show (Josh Schoneman and Freddi Stroeh) inspect the facility.
They are hopeful they can document the ghostly hijinks to save their show from being cancelled.
Unaware of the haunting happenings, the principal (Sandra Renken) is hoping the drama program will help Bram Stoker High win a coveted education award.
In the climax, the ghosts frighten the drama students (Emily Wendland, Nicole Aanenson, Bethany Starling, Grace Sweeney and Aidan Bartels) into giving outstanding performances and the paranormal investigators finally tape a hit episode.
The play is directed by Sharon Boltjes with Matt Keller as student director.
“What I liked about the play is that it tells a Shakespeare play without actually putting the play on — we haven’t done a Shakespeare angle yet,” Boltjes said.
“(It’s) a good mixture of paranormal, classic literature and, of course, humor.”
The play script also lent itself to a large cast, she added. There are 23 student actors and actresses with seven students in the technical crew. A stuffed animal, Gary the Pelican, is a mascot in the lighting booth.
The play will be performed Nov. 6 and 7 with both performances beginning at 7:30 p.m. The production lasts about 70 minutes.
Concessions will be available before the production and during the play’s intermission.
Cost is $6 for adults and $4 for students (kindergarten through 12th grade). Activities passes are accepted.
