Nutrien Ag Solutions has purchased the West Hatting Street property and buildings formerly owned by Express Ag, which closed its doors in Luverne last fall.
The acquisition was completed Friday when Nutrien employees were on site to replace signage and set up the new ag retail business operation.
“This is a very good agricultural market,” said Mark Pierson, Nutrien’s division manager for Minnesota and South Dakota.
He said a Luverne branch manager will soon be in place, with additional support staff to follow in time to provide services to local farmers for spring field work.
“I think it’s a great time to start the process,” Pierson said. “With the upcoming spring season, we’ll be able to provide a variety of inputs.”
He mentioned insecticides, fungicides and liquid fertilizers for starters.
Nutrien Ag Solutions, the retail division of Nutrien Ltd., also provides seed and precision agriculture, in addition to financial services, soil sampling, field scouting and more.
The company has a network of crop consultants in more than 1,700 locations. Its current southwest Minnesota locations are in Adrian, Pipestone, Slayton and Lakefield.
Pierson said the new Luverne location is a good fit for the Nutrien network.
“It fits strategically in western Minnesota. … We had a gap between our Lakefield, Slayton and Pipestone location,” he said.
“And we have people in the area familiar with the market and the customers.”
Nutrien purchased only the real estate — not the business — from former Express Ag owners, and the two have no business relationship outside of that.
Pierson recognized that the local ag economy is struggling along with the rest of the nation’s farmers, but he views it as an opportunity for Nutrien to support local farmers.
“If we do things right, we can help our customers,” he said. “That’s what our business is all about.”
