The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating a crash on I-90 that took the life of a Luverne woman Tuesday morning.
Brooke Thompson, a 2015 Luverne High School graduate, died Tuesday as a result of injuries she sustained in the crash.
Thompson was reportedly on her way to Sioux Falls when the crash occurred.
According to South Dakota Highway Patrol spokesman Tony Mandan, the crash involved multiple vehicles and occurred around 8 a.m. west of Brandon.
He said four vehicles were involved in the incident and both eastbound and westbound lanes of traffic were closed for a period of time while a rescue helicopter landed to assist at the scene.
Thompson was driving a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee when she was rear-ended by a 2011 Peterbilt box truck.
Following is the report report released at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday by the South Dakota Highway Patrol:
A 2014 Chevrolet Impala, a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a 2013 GMC Terrain were westbound on Interstate 90 and were almost stopped in the passing lane as traffic was merging into that lane due to road construction.
A 2011 Peterbilt Conventional box truck was westbound in the driving lane. The truck moved over to the passing lane and then swerved back into the driving lane after hitting the GMC Terrain.
The truck rear-ended the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the truck then pushed the Chevrolet Impala into the grass median.
The truck went into the grass median, across the eastbound lanes and came to rest in the south ditch of the eastbound lanes.
The 22-year-old female driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 57-year-old female driver of the GMC Terrain suffered serious non-life threatening injuries and the 34-year-old female passenger of the truck sustained minor injuries. Both were transported by ambulance to a Sioux Falls hospital.
The 34-year-old male driver of the Peterbuilt was not injured, nor was the 49-year-old driver of the Chevy Impala.
Seatbelts appeared to have been used by all of those involved. Charges are pending against the truck driver.
The incident remains under investigation.
Thompson was the daughter of Wayne and Mary Thompson, rural Luverne.
Arrangements are pending at Dingmann Funeral Home in Luverne.
