Brenda Winter and DJ Luethje took their popular “Marlene and Darlene” act to the Palace Theatre stage Sunday as a fundraiser for the Generations building project.
The two comedy shows, one at 2 and one at 7, attracted a total of more than 450 people and donations are still coming in for the new Generations meeting space and dining center to be built west of the current facility.
Winter and Luethje co-starred with Generations President George Bonnema and Historical Society President Betty Mann for the script that brings local seniors together for a homemade “Nutcracker” performance.
The point was to call attention to the Generations group and its local community goals and to raise money for the new building.
The new $3 million Generations facility will have 9,953 square feet of functional space, including seating for 112 in the main dining room with an overflow room that could accommodate an additional 56.
The new kitchen layout will have more food prep and serving space and will include a walk-in freezer and walk-in cooler.
The plan includes three multipurpose rooms that will be available for social, physical and educational activities to benefit members. These rooms will also be available for community and private events.
It will be built directly west of the current Generations dining room on a 100-by-135-foot lot purchased from Terry and Mary Thone, who will move their house and two garages to a different location.
When the new building is completed, the current dining room and Lincoln House will be demolished, and that entire property will be converted to 48 parking spaces.
