Although their 2020 season did not play out the way anyone expected, the Luverne High School trap shooting team members still found success.
Luverne placed first in Conference 5 of the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League.
Due to pandemic restrictions, all teams completed the five rounds of competition at their home ranges.
Teams were placed into eight conferences based on the number of shooters on their team instead of regionally.
Results from teams across the state were compiled at the end of the season in order to determine final conference standings.
Luverne came out on top of Conference 5 with 9,068 total points.
Mabel-Canton High School and Rockford High School placed second and third in the conference with 8,872 and 8,231 points respectively.
Luverne finished in first place in the conference during four of the five rounds of competition.
“We were really happy with how the season turned out overall,” said Luverne head coach Scott Loosbrock.
“I knew we were shooting well as the season went on and it was great to see we won our conference.”
Loosbrock said that by winning a conference championship, Luverne would have advanced to the MSHSL state tournament had it been held this year.
“That’s the only real disappointing part, especially for the seniors who have been in the program since it started four years ago,” Loosbrock said.
“They earned the right to shoot at state their senior year but weren’t able to do it.”
Senior team members included Colby Crabtree, Austin Watts-Boll, Carter Loosbrock, Mason Wenzel, Colton Schutz, Marshal Dammann and Gunnar Oldre.
“I’m just glad we were able to shoot this season and the kids could still meet the goal of qualifying for state,” Loosbrock said. “It was a good year.”
