Luverne High School One-Act Play students will perform “Spreading the News,” by Lady Gregory, at the Region 3A subsection 10 Minnesota State High School League event at Pipestone High School.
The dress rehearsal will take place 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at the Palace Theatre in Luverne. The public is welcomed to attend.
Director Joseph Stearns chose the 1907 Irish play, adopting modern-day language and characters to suit the students.
“The play is well structured, offers a fun story for students to tell, and provides for a variable cast of actors,” he said. “The play is a comedy that contains a serious message worth considering — small-town gossip can get carried away sometimes.”
In 35 minutes, students tell the story of how misunderstandings take root and lead to a false arrest for a murder that never happened.
Ten students perform in the play:
•Mia Wenzel, sheriff
•Parker Carbonneau, policeman
•Melanie Rittenhouse, Mrs. Tarpey
•Stepan Orletskyy, Bartley Fallon
•Kaitlyn Jacobs, Mrs. Fallon
•Seno Chanthalangsy, Jack Smith
•Nicole Hoogland, Martha Casey
•Chance Tunnissen, Shawn Early
•Josie Golla, Mrs. Tully
•Xavier Carbonneau, James Ryan
•Burk Johnson, lights/sound
The top two teams from Saturday’s event will perform at the section meet Feb. 1 in Redwood Falls. The section champion performs at the state event Feb. 6-7 in St. Paul.
