Luverne Public Schools students are raising money to support americacares.org, a non-profit disaster relief organization helping hurricane victims in the South.
Each homeroom has a jar to collect donations, as do the school offices.
High school students Jadyn Anderson and Anika Gust are spearheading the effort.
“We are Minnesotans; we are pretty much as far as it gets from ever experiencing a hurricane,” Anderson said.
“We will never and have never experienced something so devastating, and as Americans we have a civic duty to help our fellow Americans going through impossible circumstances.”
Donation totals are updated each day and posted in the lobby.
The Middle School and High School are competing to see which school can raise the most money, and those totals are updated each day as well.
Whichever school has raised the most money by Sept. 21 will have four students randomly selected to participate in the goal rewards assembly on Sept. 22.
If students raise $1,000, Athletic Director Todd Oye will get his legs waxed at the assembly.
If they raise $2,500, Principal Ryan Johnson will get his head shaved at the assembly as well.

If donations total $4,000, Oye, Johnson and Superintendent Craig Oftedahl will wear wigs and sing a popular female song of their choice.
As of press day Tuesday, donations had reached $1,513.
To support the effort, donations can be given to a student to share, or money can be dropped off at the High School Office. Checks can be written to Luverne High School.
