Luverne Lions Club supports diabetic scholarship, local BackPack program

Lead Summary
,

Each year the Luverne Lions Club provides scholarship funds for summer Lions Diabetes Camp to local children. This year Emma Deutsch, daughter of Sara Deutsch, was selected to attend Camp Gilbert in Waubay, South Dakota. Camp Gilbert provides educational sessions on nutrition, exercise and lifestyle management for children with Type 1 diabetes. The staff provides medical assistance for campers around the clock. The medical staff consists of diabetic educators, dietitians, adult volunteers and experienced camp counselors. Camp Gilbert is operated completely by volunteers and depends on community support for funding.
The Luverne Lions Club has joined support of the Luverne Backpack Program and Luverne Farmers Market for 160 students in preschool through 12th grade to provide nutritional support through 14 weeks of off-school summer season. Program organizers estimate summer expenses of $7,000, which they hope will be offset by fundraisers and donations from individuals, businesses and organizations. The Luverne BackPack Program distributes weekly packages to students who pre-register for the program. Children will receive three days of meals each week, along with $4 in tokens for fresh fruits and vegetables sold by the market, which also shares gardening education, taste tests and “kid-friendly” recipes.
