The Minnesota American Legion Riders rolled into the Veterans Home in Luverne Friday morning on 46 motorcycles and support vehicles.
It was the first of 23 stops on a 650-mile southern Minnesota tour that started Friday morning in Pipestone and ended Sunday night in Buffalo.
The group of roughly 70 Legion Riders accepted donations at pre-arranged locations for the National American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund.
The fund offers post-secondary education financial support to military children who have lost a parent on active duty since 9-11 or whose parent is 50 percent or greater disabled.
Legion Rider Diane Strassburg, who helped coordinate local donations, presented more than $2,000 from dozens of businesses, individuals and organizations Friday.
“You people are awesome,” she told a group gathered in the crowded Veterans Home dining room.
“Whether you are on your bikes or making donations, thank you for supporting children of veterans.”
According to Legion Rider Duane Mabon, Pipestone, donations from the first weekend of the 10th Annual Legion Riders Legacy Tour totaled $60,874 in southern Minnesota.
This includes $6,640 in donations collected locally and accepted in Luverne Friday.
The northern part of the Legacy Run tour — another 600 to 700 miles — will start Friday in Nisswa and end Sunday in Maple Grove.
