Legend behind state park's rock formations explained

By
Jason Berghorst

One of the things Blue Mounds State Park is known for is the “Stone Fence”, a mysterious rock formation aligned perfectly in an east-west line.
Each year on the first day of spring and fall, the sun sets directly in line with the rocks.
No one knows the origin of the rock formation for sure and the mystery is part of the legend.
Bud Johnson, from the Keepers of the Sacred Tradition of Pipemakers in Pipestone, will share his insight and research on the Stone Fence Saturday, July 16, and Friday, Aug. 5.
Johnson will discuss how Native Americans used this site as a trading ground centuries ago and how they survived on the vast prairies.
The event will begin at 7 p.m. both evenings at the Blue Mounds State Park Interpretive Center. The rain location is the Brandenburg Gallery in Luverne.
