Five Luverne High School juniors will learn more about how the U.S. government works in an experience reserved for a few select students.
Minnesota American Legion and Auxiliary-sponsored Boys and Girls State is open only to high school juniors and is financed by local Legion and Auxiliary groups.
While the primary purpose of the five-day Boys and Girls State events is to learn about government, participants also work on leadership skills and learn about their rights as citizens.
This year’s Boys and Girls State will take place at the same time, June 12-18, but at different locations.
Girls State will be at Bethel University in St. Paul.
Emma Mumme of Hardwick will represent the Hardwick American Legion Auxiliary. Tianna Doppenberg of Luverne was chosen to represent the Luverne Auxiliary.
Boys State will be at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.
Knute Oldre and Griffin Ahrendt, both of Luverne, were chosen by the Hardwick American Legion to attend. Dylan Thorson, also of Luverne, will represent the Luverne Legion.
