Interested in public office? Filing period is Aug. 2-16

Citizens interested in public service have opportunities to file for office in upcoming school board, small cities and some township elections.
The filing period for these offices opens Aug. 2 and closes at 5 p.m. Aug. 16.
 
School boards
In the Luverne School District, the two-year seat is open, and current board member Shelley Sandbulte has indicated she will file for re-election to that position.
Two four-year seats will also be open for election, and current board members Colleen Deutsch and Dave Riphagen have indicated they will not seek re-election to those terms.
In the Hills-Beaver Creek District, board members up for re-election this year are Amie Fick, James Kueter and Karin Moser. Those seats are for four-year terms.
In Adrian, three four-year terms will be open for election. Those seats are currently held by Mark Lonneman, David Bullerman and Lisa Kruger.
Ellsworth also has three four-year seats that will be open for election. Current board members in those positions are Cliff Schilling, Jeff Boltjes and Mike Werner.
School board candidates file in their respective district offices.
 
Small cities
The city of Luverne’s filing period closed May 31, but candidates can file next week for mayor and council in small cities in Rock County.
In Steen, Mayor Mel Van Batavia and councilmen Marlin Elbers and Mark Kruger will be up for election.
In Magnolia, Mayor Dennis Madison and council seats held by Robert Somnis and Mary Smook are open for election.
In Kenneth, Mayor Del Gangestad and council seats held by David Groen and Nora Halverson are open for election.
In Jasper, Mayor Mike Baustian and council seats held by Lisa Rodman and Karen Damman are open for election.
In the city of Hills, Mayor Keith Elbers and councilmen Brian Sandbulte and Brad Berkhof are open for election.
In Hardwick, Mayor Janyce Baustian and councilwomen Carey Teunissen and Crystal Swenson are up for election.
In Beaver Creek, the mayor and two council seats are open for election. When Mayor Carolyn DeBoer passed away Sept. 16, 2015, councilman Jamie Dysthe was appointed mayor, and Josh Boomgaarden was appointed to Dysthe’s council seat. The other council seat open for election is currently held by Alan Harnack.
Candidates for small city elections file in their respective city offices.
 
Townships
Rose Dell Township clerk Wayne Uilk and supervisor Elroy Deschepper are be up for election in November.
Battle Plain Township clerk Mark Vander Pol and supervisor Greg Talsma are up for election.
Denver Township clerk Richard Hubbling and chairman Kyle Hemme are up for election.
Martin Township supervisor David Swanson’s seat will be open.
Vienna Township clerk Doug Eeten and supervisor Larry Tweet will be up for election.
The Rock County townships of Springwater, Mound, Magnolia, Luverne, Beaver Creek, Clinton and Kanaranzi held elections in March.
Township candidates file for election in the Rock County Courthouse.
The general election will be Tuesday, Nov. 8.
