Hills-Beaver Creek wrapped up the 2022 mock trial season last week, completing a 1-3 season.
Adviser Megan Klumper saw great improvement in her team as they competed virtually from the classroom.
“They took ownership of the case and became involved in the situation,” she said. “At times I heard some of the students who played witnesses out in the hall pretending to be their characters.”
H-BC has won at least one of the season’s four rounds that comprise the two-month season for the past two years.
“I wish we had more than four competitions so that we could continue,” she said. “As soon as it seems like we are really advancing our skills, the season is over.”
H-BC’s defense team posted the team’s sole win against St. Peter White on Jan. 19. The score was 209 to 184. The defense lost to Northfield Gold on Feb. 3, 184 to 194.
The prosecution team opened this year’s competition Jan. 11 against Rochester Century, losing 184 to 209. Another loss was posted by the prosecution against St. Peter Feb. 9, 190 to 235, to end the season.
“My team made me proud,” Klumper said. “Even if we aren’t the champions of mock trial, we have built a small community. The students have acquired some skills that will be assets in their lives, including critical thinking skills and analyzing skills. Not to mention, they have learned about how courtrooms run.”
Team members include Bailey Spykerboer, Joy Taubert, Taylor Gehrke, Emma Deelstra, Larissa Steinhoff, Tahliya Kruger, Madison Gaugler, Avril Susie, Olivia Susie, Anthany Kobernick-Pasch, Taylor Spykerboer, Leif Tollefsen, Lexi Drake, Troy Durst, Kyler Hartz, Britton McKenzie, Tyrae Goodface, Liam Raymon, Troy Durst and Taylor Durst.
