H-BC, Luverne send 14 instrumentalists to Augustana Band Festival

Fourteen area band students will perform Saturday in Sioux Falls as part of the Augustana University Band Festival.
Now in its 62nd year, the band festival brings in high school students from a five-state area to participate in two full days of ensemble and clinic work before the Saturday night public performance.
Students are selected for one of three bands: Honor, Blue and Gold.
“Usually between 250-275 students are selected for the festival,” said student chairman Anna VanRavenswaay. “This year we had over 375 students apply for the festival.
Hills-Beaver Creek High School has 11 students participating in the festival.
Students and their instruments include Lauren Tatge, flute, Mackenzie Voss, flute, Josie Bartels, trumpet, Tess Van Maanen, trumpet, Allison LaRock, percussion, Shayla Rainford, flute, Michaela Abels, clarinet, Kailey Roseboom, alto saxophone, Abby Knobloch, bari saxophone, Larissa Kruid, trumpet and Jo-Hannah Ladd, percussion.
Three students will participate from Luverne High School: Mela Jarchow, flute, Kynzie Hamann, alto saxophone, and Kacie Kracht, trumpet.
Band instructors Steve Olson from H-BC and James Jarvie from Luverne nominated students for selection by the festival committee. Each student filled out applications to perform in one of the three bands.
Drs. Brandon Houghtalen from Abilene, Texas, Christian University, Dale Lonis from Acadia, Nova Scotia, University, and Larry Peterson from Augustana are the guest clinicians.
The Grand Finale Concert, which also features the Augustana Concert Band, takes place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the Mary Sommervold Hall at the Washington Pavilion in downtown Sioux Falls.

LaRock also selected for honor choir
Allison LaRock, a junior at Hills-Beaver Creek High School, was accepted into the North Central Division of the American Choir Directors Association High School SSAA Honor choir.
LaRock was chosen from nearly 1,000 applicants to participate in one of four choirs.
The event takes place in March 2020 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
