Luverne’s Greg Burger was honored Monday night as the 2015 outstanding chamber member.
During a reception at Sterling’s Café, Chamber Board President Ryan Wynia presented him with a Sioux quartzite decorative slab with his name and honor engraved in it.
Wynia spoke of Burger’s 40-year banking career, 32 of which were with Minnwest Bank. Burger retired as bank president this spring.
“Greg’s service to the community didn’t stop at the bank door,” Wynia said, referring to Burger’s volunteer work in a myriad of local organizations and causes.
Among them were the Rock County Development Corporation, Hospital Foundation, Luverne Area Community Foundation, Luverne Initiatives for Tomorrow, Rock County Historical Society and more.
“It is our honor, as the Luverne Area Chamber, to recognize you for your leadership, service, integrity and dedication to make Luverne a place where we love the life,” Wynia told Burger at the reception.
Burger said he was overwhelmed by the recognition.
“It’s quite a deal when you get honored for doing something you love,” he said. “Giving back to a community that’s given so much to me, personally and professionally.”
He said he often tells people he didn’t grow up here, but he grew here.
“When I moved here at 33 years old, I thought I knew everything,” he said. “But I grew.”
He said he and his wife, Janet, didn’t have a long-term goal of staying in Luverne for the duration of his banking career.
“But I grew to love this community,” he said. “It’s my home.”
He pledged to continue working to make Luverne a better place, and he encouraged others in the room to do the same.
“Luverne needs to continue to grow for years to come,” Burger said. “This is why Luverne is what it is.”
The Luverne Area Chamber Board of Directors began the Outstanding Chamber Member Program in 2005 to recognize retired or semi-retired individuals who help the community through volunteer time, talent, leadership and resources.
