It could hardly be called official business, but Gov. Mark Dayton had coffee with some of Luverne’s most in-the-know ladies during his March 30 visit to southwest Minnesota.
The Tuesday Morning Coffee Group met with the governor at the Blue Mound Ice Arena where he toured the facility at the invitation of Coffee Group member Connie Connell.
In 1990 Connell visited with Dayton (then state auditor) at a local DFL Chuckwagon.
He learned then about Luverne’s fundraising efforts to build an ice arena and later mailed Connell a $1,000 donation.
Last week he had a chance to see the finished facility and also meet with Connell’s coffee friends.
“Thank you for your willingness to meet with the Tuesday Morning Coffee Group in Luverne,” Connell told Dayton in the ice arena lobby where they shared coffee and bars with him.
She told him the group has been meeting for 30 years and enjoys visiting about the “state of the state and state of the country.”
Seated between Connell and Coffee Group member Dianne Ossenfort, Gov. Dayton then reviewed a short list of concerns the women had about the state of Minnesota.
Topics included education, infrastructure, environment, child care, living wage (especially for nursing home workers) and recreation (particularly repairs at the Blue Mounds State Park).
“We’re very proud to be residents of the great state of Minnesota and in particular southwest Minnesota,” Connell said.
“Thank you for your dedicated service, and feel free to have coffee with us any time.”
