The Green Earth Players’ fall production of “The Beverly Hillbillies” will bring a popular television show to the stage Nov. 15-17 and Nov. 21-24 at the Palace Theatre in Luverne.
“It’s a very iconic show,” said director Jacqueline Pierce-Humke. “There are not many people who haven’t seen or heard (of the TV show.)”
The television show aired from 1962 to 1971 and can still be seen on the small screen in syndication. The GEP production will stay close to the televised characters.
“It should bring back some fun childhood memories,” Humke said.
The comedy, written by David Rogers, is based on the first TV episode.
The plot centers on the poor backwoods Clampett family who consists of Jed Clampett, a widower and head of the household, (portrayed by Jim Harsma). Living with him are his daughter Elly May (Kieran Shea Humke) and his mother-in-law (DJ Luethje).
The Clampetts live in a run-down mountain shack in the Ozarks until an oil company executive named Brewster (Scott Wessels) offers them $25 million for the rights to drill for oil on his land.
Jed’s cousin Pearl Bodine (Laura Luitjens) prods him to move to “Californy” and pressures him to take her son Jethro Bodine (Nathan Taubert) with him.
The Clampett family moves into a mansion next door to Jed’s banker, Milburn Drysdale (Brian Taubert), and his wife, Margaret (Sylvia Newell). Mrs. Drysdale has zero tolerance for hillbillies and her superficial sophistication often clashes with the backwoods and simple mentality of the Clampetts.
Miss Hathaway (Holly Anderson) is Mr. Drysdale’s scholarly secretary.
Britton McKenzie, Stephanie Roozenboom, Rylee Anderson, Lexi Drake, Zoe Perkins, David Vis, Brieanne Merson, Amber Schieck, Augusta Papik and Brandon Taubert portray other characters in the 95-minute production.
The evening performances on Nov. 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23 are at 7:30 p.m. The Nov. 17 and 24 matinee performances begin at 2 p.m.
Tickets are currently on sale from noon to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday at the Palace Box Office at 116 W. Main St., Luverne, or by calling 507-283-4339.
