This black-and-white image of the Palace Theatre recently surfaced in the negative file at the Rock County History Center.
The photo by Jim Herreid shows crowds of people wrapped around the block along Freeman Avenue along the west side of the Palace building during a Wednesday Night Free Movie Night sometime during the 1940s.
Rock County Historical Society President Betty Mann was excited about the image, which she had never seen before.
The side stairs and awning lead to upstairs living quarters of the building and former ballroom.
Many have fond memories of going downtown to pick up a free movie ticket from a business and enjoying a film at the Palace.
“The 4 and 7 p.m. shows were generally packed, and I often remember sharing a seat with my sister,” Jane Wildung Lanphere recently shared with the Luverne Alumni News. “They weren’t first run movies but they were free. That meant that my quarter allowance could be spent on more of those candy case favorites.”
