Luverne High School speech coach Gavin Folkestad was selected by his peers as the 2020 Section Speech Coach of the Year.
This is the first time the 10-year veteran coach has received the honor.
“I was surprised when I heard I got the award,” Folkestad said. “We have a large number of great veteran coaches in our section who all would be well-deserving of being Section 3A Speech Coach of the Year.”
Luverne assistant speech coach Caroline Thorson was not as surprised.
“He is a calm, thoughtful leader-coach who allows his speech students to find their own voice and helps them capitalize on their individual strengths,” Thorson shared on social media.
Folkestad will be presented with a certificate this fall at the Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota gathering.
“Or (it) will be mailed in the event that the event is hosted virtually,” Folkestad said.
The coronavirus ended the 2020 speech season in mid-March, about a month short of the state speech tournament. This season Folkestad and Thorson led 40 seventh- through 12-grade students on the team.
