First meet yields second place for Luverne speech team

The Luverne High School speech team opened the 2020 season with a second place team finish in Worthington on Saturday.
Eighteen students competed with 200 other students from 16 different schools in three rounds of competition.
Fourteen Cardinal speakers received individual honors at this event as listed:
Creative expression: Megan Hansen, blue ribbon.
Discussion: Alexa Chesley, second place.
Duo interpretation: Josie Golla and Mia Wenzel, red ribbon.
Extemporaneous reading: Nicole Hoogland, 1st place.
Extemporaneous speaking: Chance Tunnissen, first, Parker Carbonneau, third.
Great speeches: Griffen Jarchow, red ribbon.
Humorous interpretation: Seno Chanthalangsy, third, Gunnar Oldre, sixth, Luke Thorson, blue ribbon.
Original oratory: Sophia Lanoue, red ribbon.
Storytelling: Hannah Baker, fifth,  Xavier Carbonneau, sixth.
Blue and red ribbons signify one and two places out of the medals placings respectively.
Coaches Gavin Folkestad and Caroline Thorson applaud students for their second-place finish.
“The 2020 Cardinal team had fewer participants at this first meet due to some scheduling conflicts and illnesses,” Thorson said.
“Despite this, we were very excited at how the team did. We are looking forward to competing with a full roster Saturday at the Minneota Invitational.”
There are 40 Luverne students signed up for this year’s speech team.
