Conditions right for 'rime' frost

Monday morning’s fog and wind conditions allowed rime ice to form on area trees and other outdoor fixtures. Rime ice forms when small water droplets build up as they freeze on contact. Meteorologist Lance VandenBoogart said Monday’s conditions were perfect for the rime ice to form. “You did have some fog in the area,” he said. Rime ice grows toward a prevailing wind unlike hoar frost, which generally won’t form on a windy day. Hoar frost is the buildup of ice in delicate feather shapes when water vapor in the air condenses as ice on a surface.
