City offers relief to Luverne businesses

Luverne businesses will get another shot of financial help from the city to get through pandemic budget shortfalls.
At their Dec. 8 meeting, Luverne City Council members approved a resolution that will transfer $100,000 from the Electric Utility to the Economic Development Authority.
The EDA would then use the money to provide continuing financial assistance to small businesses in Luverne that are continuing to suffer from the COVID-19 health pandemic.
The financial grants are based on electric utility usage and are aimed at the businesses that were originally closed by state mandates.
It also specifically targets the bars, restaurants and other facilities that are closed at this time under the latest governor’s mandate.
The council approved the resolution unanimously. “I support this,” council member Caroline Thorson said. “I feel like we must continue to do what we can to help our businesses.”
It is estimated that the targeted money will help more than 50 businesses with checks that will go out over a four-month period (January through April).
The city mailed letters to eligible entities, but if some feel they are overlooked, they can contact City Hall at 507-449-2388.
