For the 25th consecutive year, the city of Luverne has received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.
At their June 25 meeting, Luverne City Council members formally recognized city finance director Barb Berghorst for her efforts in qualifying the city for the award.
Mayor pro-tem Caroline Thorson thanked Berghorst for her quality work and pointed out that the award is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting.
“It’s a pretty prestigious honor,” Thorson said. “The citizens of Luverne are in wonderful hands.”
She said that in 2017 only 1 percent of cities the size of Luverne received the award, and in Minnesota, fewer than 4 percent were so recognized.
According to the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) the award represents a “significant accomplishment by a government and its management.”
It recognizes “Excellence in Financial Reporting” by cities, and Berghorst is the person primarily responsible for those duties in Luverne. However, in receiving the award, she noted that the staff members who work with her deserve credit for the achievement.
