City Buys blighted property for future development

Lead Summary
, ,

The Luverne City Council purchased three more blighted properties to make way for improved housing or economic development.
The council took action at its Nov. 12 meeting to amend the 2019 budget in order to adjust for the purchases, which were negotiated in the past three months. They include properties at:
•319 E. Maple from Adam and Amy Smedsrud for $15,000 on Aug. 27.
•321 E. Maple from Gene Gehrke for $6,000 on Sept. 18.
•108 S. Kniss from the VanderPoel family for $39,900 on Oct. 15.
The total expenditures are $60,900, plus deed tax and recording of $530.
The council also took action on Nov. 12 to designate the parcels for the public purpose of economic development or housing.
The old residential dwellings on the lots will be demolished in the near future to prepare the lots for future development.
None of the budget adjustments will cause total appropriations to exceed total estimated revenue and cash fund balances.
