The Hills-Beaver Creek School District has a new batting cage in Beaver Creek on the corner of East Sixth Avenue and South Fourth Street, thanks to a gift of $8,296 from the Frank Boone Trust and $1,000 from the Sioux Valley Energy Trust.
Halden Van Wyhe, H-BC summer recreation director, said the batting cage is a valuable practice tool since there are three softball fields in the district and there were seven teams this season.
“The city of Beaver Creek has been very supportive of our program for this project,” he said.
“They allowed us to construct the batting cage on their property and allowed their employees (Travis Helgeson and Rex Metzger) to help with many parts of the construction,” Van Wyhe said.
Derek Sammons headed up the construction work along with the help of volunteers, Van Wyhe said.
“Derek deserves a lot of praise and recognition for donating a large amount of time and skilled labor to complete the project,” he said.
The batting cage is on a concrete pad with artificial turf and is held up by six poles and a cable system for easy set-up and take-down.
“We were hoping to be done constructing the batting cage by April or May but wet conditions this spring didn’t allow us to do much work until later,” Van Wyhe said.
“This battling cage is a community project so we encourage anyone in the Hills-Beaver Creek School District to utilize this facility with care.”
