About 400 people attended the fly-in and drive-in pancake breakfast Saturday morning at Quentin Aanenson Field Luverne Municipal Airport.
Jerry Aanenson traveled to Luverne from Maryland to take in the event and to honor his dad, the late Quentin Aanenson, a World War II fighter pilot and Luverne legendary war hero.
“I’m here to honor my father,” he said, wearing his dad’s aviation jacket. “This is the closest I get to my dad, other than Arlington National Cemetery.”
He said he enjoys spending time at the Herreid Military Museum in the Courthouse Square where a video loop plays scenes from “The WAR,” a Ken Burns documentary film that includes Quentin Aanenson’s story.
“When I go up the stairs, I hear the voices of my mom and dad, which is comforting to me,” Jerry Aanenson said.
In addition to pancakes, aircraft models and classic cars, the event featured Skydive Adventures skydiving, inflatables for kids and other entertainment.
Lauren Clark, Sioux Falls, was one of several to venture a first-time tandem jump with Skydive Adventures member Joe (“Sketti”) Negrete.
“It was amazing,” Clark said after she safely landed in the grass south of the car show staging area. “Life is about making memories. That’s just a memory-making moment.”
