Netters notch victories

By John RittenhouseThe Luverne tennis team recorded a pair of convincing wins on different courts.The Cardinals recorded a five-point victory over MACCRAY in Clara City Thursday to wrap up the Southwest Conference title. Luverne strolled to a seven-point home win over Yellow Medicine East Tuesday.Luverne, 9-4 overall, hosts Fairmont today and Martin County West Tuesday. The Cards play at the YME Tournament Saturday.Luverne 7, YME 0Luverne swept the Sting without dropping a set to the visitors during Tuesday’s home match."I was really pleased that we were ready to play this match," said Cardinal coach Greg Antoine. "Everybody stepped up and played well."Dusty Antoine (6-0 and 6-1 over James Thostensoen), David Nelson (6-0 and 6-0 over Eric Lynner), Derek Boeve (6-0 and 6-1 over Mike Gill) and Zach Sanderson (6-2 and 7-5 over Colin Bennett) prevailed at singles.Brandon Deragisch and Nick Heronimus nailed down 6-1 and 6-4 wins over Justin Thomas and Eric Dubbelde at No. 1 doubles. Weston Sawtelle and Erik Stegemann posted a pair of 7-5 victories over Lee Cherveny and Clark Christian at No. 2. Matt Kreuch and Jamie Vickery secured a pair of 6-4 wins over Jon Barber and Barry Jacobson at No. 3.Luverne 6,MACCRAY 1The Cardinals capped a 4-0 Southwest Conference campaign with a five-point win over MACCRAY in Clara City Thursday.Luverne swept the hosts in doubles and went 3-1 in singles to end a perfect conference schedule."Our hard work this week on hitting the ball harder is paying off," said LHS coach Antoine. "We were able to win some points by hitting the ball by our opponents."Deragisch and Heronimus (7-5 and 6-2 over Travis Wubben and Matt Skogland), Sawtelle and Stegemann (6-0 and 6-2 over Nate Satre and Alex Sweep) and Kreuch and Austin Lee (6-1 and 6-0 over Macolay Lambert and Gavin Balderas) won in straight sets at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles respectively.Luverne’s Nelson posted a pair of 6-4 wins over Mike Ammermann at No. 2 singles, Boeve disposed of Nate Choyapaporpinn by 6-2 and 6-0 scores at No. 3, and Sanderson bested Mitch Kremin by 6-4 and 7-5 scores at No. 3.MACCRAY’s Zach Rieger beat Dusty Antoine in a three-set match (6-3, 2-6, 6-1) at first singles.
