Road losses add up for Luverne Redbirds; now 7-6 on season

Amateurs finish 1-2 at Atwater tournament over weekend

The Luverne Redbirds went 1-3 in games played in Milroy and Atwater.
The local amateurs came up short in Milroy before  defeating Atwater and losing to teams from Minneapolis and Bird Island at the Atwater Tournament.
The 7-6 Redbirds played a home game with Hadley Wednesday (June 19) and will play a make-up game in Hadley Sunday at 5 p.m.
 
Bird Island 5, Luverne 3
Bird Island needed extra innings to defeat the Luverne Redbirds Saturday in Atwater.
Playing their second seven-inning game of the day in the Atwater Tournament, Luverne lost 5-3 in eight innings.
Brooks Mauer pitched the first six innings for the Redbirds, giving up one run.
Skylar Wenninger replaced Mauer on the mound for the final two innings.
Luverne was up 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning before giving up two runs to extend the game to extra innings.
In the top of the eighth inning, Luverne loaded the bases with no outs but was not able to score a run.
In the bottom of the same inning, Bird Island hit a two-out, two run walk-off homerun to win the game.
Ben Serie led the offense for Luverne with three hits, one RBI and one run scored.
Tyler Reisdorfer, Wenninger, and Andrew DeBoer each had two hits for the Redbirds. Wenninger and DeBoer each added an RBI.

Luverne 8, Atwater 0
The only win of the Atwater Tournament for Luverne came against the hosts Saturday afternoon.
Luverne came out on top of the Atwater Chuckers 8-0.
Tyler Reisdorfer was on the mound for the Redbirds the entire game. He struck out nine Atwater batters.
Luverne scored four runs in the fourth inning and four more in the sixth while holding Atwater scoreless in the game.  
Declan Beers and Zack Loosbrock had two hits each for the visitors.
Gaige Nath scored two runs for Luverne and Skylar Wenninger had two RBIs.

Mpls Angels 3, Luverne 1
Luverne opened play at the Atwater Tournament Friday night with a loss to an amateur team from Minneapolis.
The Angels defeated the Redbirds 3-1.
Jake Haugen pitched the entire game for Luverne. He struck out four batters, walked one and gave up only two earned runs.
“He threw really well against a good team,” said Redbirds player/manager Brooks Mauer.
Luverne was led at the plate by Haugen, Tyler Reisdorfer and Skylar Wenninger who had two hits each in the contest.
The Redbirds’ only run came in the third inning when Haugen scored off an RBI single by Wenninger.

Milroy Irish 6, Luverne 5
The Redbirds traveled to Irish Yard in rural Milroy June 12 to face the Milroy Irish.
Luverne suffered a close 6-5 loss as guests at the country ballpark.
The visitors opened the game by scoring three runs in the top of the first. Two of the runs were courtesy of a double by Ben Serie.
Luverne scored once more in each  of the second and third innings.
Gaige Nath and Logan Norman each scored two runs for Luverne.
Connor Crabtree pitched 3 2/3 innings for the Redbirds. Andrew DeBoer pitched the rest of the game.
