Junior Legion team wins five out of seven home games

The Luverne Junior Legion (formerly VFW) baseball team went 5-2 during a very busy week of games all staged at Redbird Field in Luverne.
Luverne split a doubleheader with Sioux Falls East Tuesday (June 2) and went 3-1 during its annual home tournament Friday-Sunday before defeating Slayton 10-1 Monday.
The 6-2 Junior Legion squad is scheduled to host Marshall Blue tonight (Thursday) before playing in Worthington Monday. 
 
Luverne 10, Slayton 0
Luverne played its seventh home game in seven days Monday night and came out with a 10-0 win over Slayton.
Shaid Shearer shut down the Slayton batters, giving up only one hit while pitching the entire game.
Shearer helped his cause by striking out five Slayton batters.  
The home team insured the victory by scoring three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings after scoring single runs in the first and third innings and two runs in the fourth.  
Luverne was led at the plate by Cade Wenninger and Jaime Palmquist who had two hits each.

Windom 4, Luverne 3
Luverne came up short in its quest to win its home tournament Sunday.
After going 3-0 in tournament pool play, the home team fell to Windom in the championship game with a score of 4-3 at Redbird Field.
Casey Sehr started on the mound for Luverne. He pitched two innings giving up three runs and striking out two.
Hunter Baker, Braydon Ripka, Luke Bosch and Jaime Palmquist also pitched for Luverne in the game.
At the plate, Palmquist had an RBI double.
Ethan Beyer and Bailey Cowell each had two hits in the game.
Shaid Shearer, Sehr and Cowell each scored a run for Luverne.

Luverne 8, Watertown 0
Luverne’s Cade Wenninger started the game versus Watertown, Minnesota, on the right foot, and his team didn’t look back en route to an 8-0 win Saturday night.
Wenninger hit a lead-off triple in the first inning and scored one run in the game.
Bailey Cowell and Connor Overgaard each hit doubles in the fourth and sixth innings respectively.
Overgaard, Ethan Beyer and Hunter Baker also had two RBIs in the game.
Beyer and Jaime Palmquist offered two hits in the contest.
Wenninger pitched the whole game. He struck out seven batters and gave up three hits.

Luverne 7, Worthington 6
Luverne earned its second-straight walk-off victory in less than 24 hours Saturday afternoon.
The home team defeated Worthington 7-6 in its second game of the Luverne Junior Legion tournament.
In the seventh and final inning, Colby Crabtree hit a double. A passed ball moved him to third before a single by Casey Sehr sent Crabtree home to win the game.
Crabtree pitched five innings for Luverne and also hit a two-run homerun in the fourth inning.
Bailey Cowell replaced Crabtree on the mound for the last two innings.
Offensively Luverne was led by Sehr with three hits. Crabtree and Shaid Shearer had two hits each.
Cade Wenninger and Crabtree each scored twice for the home team.

Luverne 3, Harrisburg 2
Luverne opened its home Junior Legion tournament by defeating Harrisburg, South Dakota, 3-2 Friday night at Redbird Field.
The hosts won in extra innings in walk-off fashion.
In the bottom of the ninth, Shaid Shearer received a walk before Bailey Cowell bunted him to second base.
Ethan Beyer then earned a walk before a fake bunt by Cade Wenninger led to a double steal that put Luverne runners on second and third base.
A wild pitch to Wenninger allowed  Shearer to score and win the game for Luverne.
Beyer pitched eight innings for the hosts, striking out eight batters and giving up four hits. Cowell replaced Beyer on the mound for the final inning.

Luverne 11, SF East 9
Luverne earned a split with Sioux Falls East by winning the second game of a doubleheader at Redbird Field June 2. The hosts came out on top 11-9.
Luverne had balanced offense by scoring three runs in the first inning, three runs in the fourth, one run in the fifth and four runs in the sixth.
Shaid Shearer led Luverne at the plate with three hits and scored two runs in the game.
Braydon Ripka, Jaime Palmquist and Riley Anderson each had two hits for Luverne.
Shearer, Casey Sehr, Anderson and Trygve Gangestad scored two runs each. Sehr also batted in three runners.

SF East 11, Luverne 1
A short-handed Luverne Junior Legion team suffered its first loss of the season June 2 versus Sioux Falls East.
A number of Junior Legion players were in Jackson with the Luverne High School team the same night.
Luverne lost to Sioux Falls East 11-1 at Redbird Field.
Riley Anderson had Luverne’s only hit in the game. Braydon Ripka scored the run and Jaime Palmquist had the RBI.
