Junior League opens season with win over Adrian

Luverne’s Junior Legion baseball team opened its 2019 season with a 13-1 five-inning victory over Adrian Monday at Redbird Field.
Formerly known as the VFW baseball team, the squad comprised of 15-, 16-, and 17-year-old players will play as a Junior Legion team in 2019.
Luverne opened the new season in style by scoring eight runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back.
Offensively the home team was led by Hunter Baker with three hits. Baker also scored a run and batted in two more runners in the game.
Luverne’s Bailey Cowell, Ethan Beyer, Jaime Palmquist and Shaid Shearer each had two hits in the contest.
Casey Sehr, Cowell, Palmquist and Shearer scored two runs each for Luverne.
Beyer pitched the first two innings for Luverne, striking out two Adrian batters while giving up two hits and no walks.
Cowell replaced Beyer on the mound, pitching two innings with six strikeouts and giving up one hit with two walks.
Baker pitched the final inning for the victors.
The Luverne Junior Legion team hosted Sioux Falls in a double-header Tuesday (June 4) and plays at Russell-Tyler-Ruthton tonight (Thursday).
The annual home tournament will be played at Redbird Field this Friday-Sunday.
Luverne hosts Slayton Monday.
