Cardinal golfers wrap up season at Section 3AA Tournament

The 2015 golf season came to an end for the Luverne Cardinals during the second round of the Section 3AA Tournament staged at the Oakdale Golf Course near Buffalo Lake.
The Luverne girls’ team and five boys qualified for the second round based on their 18-hole performances during the first round on May 20.
No Cardinals qualified for state play.
The LHS girls, who were in fourth place in the team standings after the first round, placed fifth overall with 755 strokes when the final round was complete.
Makayla Sterrett (90), Hailey Remme (97), Madison Crabtree (99) and Hannah VerSteeg (99) made contributions to Luverne’s team tally in the second round, while Hailey Franken shot a 121 without impacting the scoring.
Minnewaska Area (652) won the team title, while Marshall (665), Jackson County Central (707) and Litchfield (751) topped the Cards in the standings.
The LHS girls ended the season with a 29-23 overall record.
The five players with the lowest scores who were not members of the championship team advance to state individually.
They are Marshall’s Jessica Blanchard (159), Hannah Peterson (163) and Kami Love (169), JCC’s Alison Benson (164) and Litchfield’s Kalley Spreiter (166).
Sterrett produced Luverne’s lowest two-round score of 180 and was followed by Remme (189), Crabtree (192), VerSteeg (194) and Franken (234).
Luverne’s Coy Gonnerman shot a 76, Chaz Smedsrud and Colton Arends carded 83s, Mark Spreiter an 84 and Jack Baustian a 98 in the final round without qualifying for state.
Worthington won the team title, while New Ulm’s Ethan Krause (151), JCC’s Joe Brinkman (154), Minnewaska Area’s Brett Buckingham (159), Marshall’s Jacob Baker (160) and Morris Area’s Jacob Zosel (161) advance individually.
