The Minnesota High School League celebrated its 100th year anniversary this year by giving each of the 336 participants a commemorative centennial celebration coin.
Schacht and two of his Luverne teammates at Friday’s state speech tournament at Lakeville North High School took extra medals home.
Schacht said the goal in his last year of high school speech eligibility was to reach the finals (top 8) and better his previous finishes of 11th and 17th.
He reached that goal by finishing sixth.
Sophomore teammate Knute Oldre earned his second state medal by placing fifth in discussion, and Samantha Ykema, also a sophomore, finished seventh.
Sophomore Dylan Thorson participated in extemporaneous speaking, and junior Derek Krueger in great speeches.

Three also earn state medals for Adrian
Adrian junior Jodi Bents earned her second medal at the state level when she placed fifth in informative speaking. Teammate Tommy McCarthy, also a senior, placed second. This was the fourth state medal. Senior Bryan Beltran placed fifth in great speeches in his first year in state competition.
Senior Justice Redding participated in extemporaneous reading and junior Anna Haper competed in great speeches.
