Taylor children: 'How does a family express gratitude to a community?'

 
To the Editor:
How do you thank a town?  How does a family express gratitude to a community? In 1999 our parents retired from their beloved farm life near Adrian and moved to town. They moved to Luverne.  On July 31, after several weeks of failing health, our mother died in the loving embrace of this remarkably giving community.  
During their 16 years in Luverne, Lucille and Jerry Taylor became purposefully involved in their church, St. Catherine’s, their neighborhood, the Lions Club and hospice care. They enthusiastically supported and sang the praises of the Star Herald, the wonderful farmers market, George and Corrine’s garden center, the Pizza Ranch, the singularly spectacular Tri-State Band competition, the treasured Palace Theatre and yes … even your notable, one-of-a-kind Loopy’s.  
They grew to love the many good-hearted business owners, community leaders and neighbors whose genuine and tireless contributions helped to create this caring community. Father Tom, their pastor at St. Catherine’s, became an integral and beloved part of their lives and they cherished his keenly perceptive pastoral care.
Dad continues to reside at your remarkable Veterans Home.*  We can’t say enough good things about the skilled and caring staff who have made this a wonderful home for him.  
Mom lived her last weeks in the abundantly loving care of the staff and volunteers at The Cottage hospice center … an extraordinary jewel in Luverne’s crown. The people in these two care communities, who see and believe in the best in humanity, make caregiving a work of heart.
So … for our family … filled with gratitude … it just feels necessary and good to express our thanks.

*Editor’s notes:
Lucille’s husband, Jerry, died Sunday night, Aug. 9, and in the words of the Taylor children, “They’re together now.” His obituary appears on page 7A.
